Claire Sandars

Born in 1972, Claire followed her art foundation course in Cheltenham with a degree in Fine Art at Reading University. After graduating she worked briefly in the film industry and later became an art consultant advising clients and commissioning other artists for a wide variety of projects. In 2002 Claire returned to painting full time. Her work is inspired by the African wildlife of Kenya and Namibia as well as eighteen months spent living in South Africa. Traditional painting and glazing techniques combine with an unorthodox use of muted colours with strong accent colours and undertones; backgrounds are kept deliberately minimal to give a dynamic and contemporary feel. She is particularly fired up by large majestic animals and defining muscle structure. Claire lives and works in North Wiltshire. As well as wildlife painting, she also specialises in portraiture. She has a PGCE in Art and Design and teaches to Foundation Studies level.
